Private papers search tips
The simplest and most comprehensive way to search is via the Keywords box, which will search the Brief Descriptions, Indexes, and the detailed Contents Lists. Just enter a word or words in the keywords box and click the Submit Search button.
If the keywords box produces too many hits, try using the Subject or Name boxes, which search only those indexes and not the Contents Lists. You need only enter one word, and the system will respond provided the word occurs in the Subject or Name Index.
You can also perform more complex searches using the Keywords, Subject or Name boxes: see the Advanced guide for some tips.
You can narrow any of the above searches by entering start and end year dates in the appropriate boxes.
To see the Subject or Name Indexes click on them under the Browse Indexes of heading. These lists will give you an idea of the more important subjects and names in the catalogue. If one of them interests you just click on it. To fast forward down the lists, select a letter from the alphabet at the top, eg R. But note that these names and subjects are not exhaustive - many others appear in the Contents Lists which you can only search via the Keyword Box.
To search by Shelfmark simply select the appropriate ‘stem’ (Mss Eur; IOR Neg; IOR Pos; Photo Eur; Other) then enter the number (e.g. F123, K45; 15538; 234; Mack). Entering just the first letter of the shelfmark in "Other" will retrieve all shelfmarks beginning with that letter.

For a Detailed Record of any deposit, click its reference number. Larger collections have Contents Lists. To see these, click View Contents List either here or in the Detailed Record.
Some Contents Lists are quite long, and these can normally be searched using the method supplied by your browser (eg Ctrl-F in IE or Netscape).

Cross links: the Detailed Record of each deposit gives the name of its compiler and lists the subjects and names assigned to it. These also serve as cross links. Thus clicking on the name of the compiler will bring up other deposits relevant to that compiler; and clicking on one of the index terms will bring up all other deposits indexed under that subject or name.
Links to other catalogues: where the collection contains items which
are also catalogued as prints, drawings or photographs (eg sketch books, photo
albums), click See also Prints, Drawings & Photographs in the left hand sidebar to link to those records.
Please note that the 'Search' icon in the left hand sidebar links to the search engine for the British Library website. That search engine does not cover the India Office Select Materials Catalogues.
